As the Legion invasion begins, unknown eyes watch with interest...Book Description
Excitement was mounting while I waited for this book as it makes a nice change to read science fiction, and from the description it actually looked as though it could be along the lines of some of my favourite sci/fi author’s (Neal Asher, Alistair Reynolds, and Peter F Hamilton). This excitement was tempered with caution as a lot has been promised in the past by similar first time novelists and unfortunately not delivered.
My first of many good signs was that the book was of good length. The start was intriguing bringing into play an intriguing scenario of galactic watchers, and then straight into a separate well-paced scene with interesting characters and a storyline that caught the imagination (good writing). No overly long build up but straight into the meat of the story, definitely grabbed the attention. How could these two things be related? All signs did indeed look good.
The story stays at a good pace and invites you to stay reading no matter what. The characters are very well thought out and fully rounded even characters that do not play a full part though I won’t tell you which, I was surprised constantly. The technology was well described though thankfully not too much very inventive and there were a few things that I had not come across before. It plays a major part in the storyline as it should but it is not the sole reason for the story. The plot is familiar but it becomes more expansive and unique as we go along, with twists and turns along the way.
Overall very good, but the added bonus was the writing. The author ticks all of the boxes in that respect, research he has done; concept excellent; characters engaging; technology believable and well described & writing style impressive. I’m finding it difficult but excited none the less that this is his first novel.
As normal I’ve only provided a general overview but hopefully enough to make readers of science fiction to give this a go as it will be well worth it. In my opinion mainstream science fiction publishers should read this as for me it is as good as most of the mainstream authors out there and I would happily add him to my list of must purchase, so if you enjoy the authors that I mentioned above then you should enjoy this. I just hope that this is the first of many. I highly recommend this book!  5 Stars!

The Consuming : Demon Soul Saga by Todd Boyer

Who Can Stop the Apocalypse?
Jack O'Conner is lost, alone in the world. A year after the tragic death of his soul mate, alcohol is his only companion. He spends his nights drinking, angry, blaming God for his misery. Jack seems to be an empty vessel full of bitterness.
He catches the eye of a small demon scout named Max, who is searching for a soul to be consumed by his partner, Ike. Max learns about a warrior demon named Garrock, and his terrifying plan to overthrow Lucifer and start the Apocalypse. Many of Lucifer's lies are revealed to Max, including the surprising truth about Jesus. With a new perspective on the value of mankind, and in a last-ditch effort to save his friend Ike, Max befriends Jack. The future of the world lies in the unlikely hands of two demons, and Jack. Book Description
The Consuming is the first book in the Demon Soul Saga by Todd Boyer, and lays the ground work for what could be very interesting series. For those who love their Bible lore this book will feed your habit. This novel fits nicely within the fantasy genre, and brings with it a new twist to Angels and Demons and their battle of good and evil.  The author takes us to the depths of hell and looks into the heart of a demon and brings new light to the fallen.
The book follows two demons Ike and Max, a unique friendship who are on the earthly plane living and existing as Ike “consumes” humans in order to walk around unnoticed. Used to wreaking havoc with the people’s lives he chooses as vessels, Ike soon discovers himself trapped inside “Jack” who they believed to without faith. Much to his surprise Jack has rediscovered his faith which enables him to take back control from Ike.  Max a fellow demon and Ike’s best friend does whatever he can to rescue Ike. In his attempt to help Ike he soon discovers a plan set into motion by forces that are larger than then all as the war Heaven and Hell gets nasty.  Here is where we see the most unlikely of heroes as Jack, Max & Ike team to save the world and restore the balance between Heaven and Hell.
The few chapters of the book started off a bit choppy and it felt like I was stopping and starting but after giving it more time the author really started to settle into his story and it started to flow. I think this was all down to the author’s indecision on how bad his demons were going to be. I feel with a bit of editing in the beginning it will blend nicely with the rest of the book. The book moved at a fairly fast pace moving between characters as this is the first in the series the author did a great job of laying the foundations of the story as well as slowly introducing the characters in a way that by the end of the book you can’t help but be in their corner.
I felt as I read that Max was the one character that really stands out as his character is developed as the story progresses and leaving Ike and Jack as supporting characters and not fully developed to their potential. I am not sure this is what the author intended but from my reading perspective Max truly was the star of this book. Though I would like to mention that the character of Lucifer was really well written, he was regal, dark, a bit twisted and arrogant and I loved the author’s interpretation of the King of Hell.
The common theme of storyline is about friendship, loyalty and faith. There were several different plot lines within the story and the author leaves a few loose ends which I am sure will be tied up in the next installment of the Demon Saga. All in all this was an easy read and suitable for most ages
I will mention that this book does have quite a bit of biblical lore at first seemed a bit preachy but as I continued to read I understood why it is after all a book about faith. Most times books with religious content the authors can go overboard in lore or back history but the author does a really good job of keeping it light while giving you really good information about the story. I loved the fantasy aspect of this book and the author’s descriptions brought the realms of Angels and Demons to life and really add extra layers to the story as I was able to visualise the scenes in my head. Though I felt it was a bit on the tame side, but that is my own personal opinion for I love my dark gritty books.
So if you are in the mood for inspiring easy read this one is for you! With that said I give this book 3.5 Stars.

Wuthering Frights by H.P Mallory

A father she never knew existed, An impossible decision that had to be made, A lie she must keep to herself at all costs, And the realization that every choice she makes has consequences.

Fairy and law enforcement agent, Dulcie O'Neil, has just discovered that her father is the Head of the Netherworld, and a double-dealing, illegal potions importer. Worse yet, she's now working for him.

Knight Vander, Dulcie's boyfriend and Head of the Association of Netherworld Creatures, is on to her father, but, in the process, will he discover Dulcie's secret? And if he does, will it mean his life?  Book Description

Well the eagerly awaited book four is out. First thing to say is you really must read books 1-3 first and they are available on kindle as a bundle at excellent price. This series is in the paranormal romance genre but not one of those heavy deep stories – though I love those too – but a lighter easy to read style. Sometimes you want a book that’s very deep and others you want something more gentle to read that you can fit in around your life without having to restart to recall who's who – H P Mallory fits this perfectly and with our lives being so busy I’m sure more and more readers are looking for books like this. Both the Dulcie O’Neil and Jolie Wilkins series fit this brief well – having got up to date with Dulcie I’ve now to catch up with Jolie's life!)

HP's books are always well written and edited, full credit here :) – none of the oft made kindle mistakes of books full of errors in grammar and spelling, I can live with a few, everyone is human but too many and I just get put off. They're also well priced and a good length – so many “bargain” books are simply short stories or novellas but not these ones, just good value for money.

Anyway – to the book...Dulcie is working for her newly discovered father who is not only head of the underworld but an ego maniac out for power and distributing illegal potions. She agreed to work for him at end of last book in order to free her lover Knight from prison where her father had unfairly incarcerated him. This means that as knight is head of the ANC Dulcie needs to get her job back but has to also ensure she and knight break up as he will be suspicious of her actions and she can't cope with lying to him while still being in a relationship. She has to follow her fathers instructions or he will kill Knight and she knows he means the threat. It's a very emotional and draining time for Dulcie and tear jerking when she has to make Knight believe its all over...I felt so so sad for her having to do what she believes is wrong, go against all her moral principles and has no choice if she wants to save Knight. She's determined not to allow her father to trap her long term as he has her ex boss and crush Quinn whose given up hope of anything better but when will her opportunity come?

The usual tangles follow – handsome vampire Bram whose keen to get into Dulcie knickers has his part to play in her adventures, as do her friends who worry about how she seems to have changed since her return. Bram is always very secretive but we learn a little more about his previous involvement with the underworld and why he wants to keep away now, and in the process see that he genuinely seems to have feelings for Dulcie other than just physical desires. Quinn is also working unwillingly for her father and heavily involved in the story but she's not sure she can rely on his help as he seems to have accepted his fate and tells her she shouldn't fight it. He's also keen to try again with Dulcie knowing she had a crush on him before and feeling that being both in same boat they could comfort each other.

They get told about a new drug her father is about to flood the market with and its very very addictive and Dulcie feels she has to do something but what? There follows a real white knuckle adventure for her in typical Dulcie style with everyone thinking she's doing other things and no-one knowing the truth. She has to take a chance in trusting someone but has she chosen correctly. Well at a breakneck speed all comes hurtling to a nail biting climax, more tender scenes where Knight shows he still loves her and yet can't be with her as a criminal – its really bitter-sweet knowing how she really feels and yet she can't let him know the truth for his own safety.

There follow revelations that not everyone is who they seem and not all is as straightforward as it appeared. Sort of par for the course for Dulcie books where lose ends are neatly tied (thankfully – I hate those books where they are left til next one in series) and yet cliffhanger openings for next instalment in her adventures are neatly brought in to whet out appetites and try our patience...waiting for next instalment is always so hard when a story has gripped like this :(

The Stars – well, spelling and grammar excellent, decent length, well priced and a gripping storyline once again with an ending I didn't guess – has to be a 5 star book :)

My Demon by Lisa C Hinsley

Clive beguiles and seduces and only Alex can see, hear and touch him. The stranger comes bearing a gift … and a warning. With the fate of their worlds in the balance, Alex is the best candidate, hand-selected to save the human race, and Clive offers his guidance and support to help her fulfill her destiny.

It’s like having an imaginary friend but nineteen year old Alex soon learns that the line between reality and perception is murky, with consequences too terrible to ignore. The gift is ‘sight’ and what she sees are human shells, their souls forfeit, including the people closest to her.

Clive makes claims—and promises—manipulating and punishing at will until he drives her to incomprehensible acts of desperation. Terrified, Alex must decide if succumbing to her new reality is worth the price she must pay. Book Description

This book is in the fantasy/horror genre. Its a good length and well written and edited – those are my real bugbears in so many ebooks – the self publishing route opens up the market and is great for us readers but also means some really dire and poorly spelt books with huge glaring grammatical errors. Lisa has done an excellent job avoiding this and I'm sure its time well spent.

We begin with Alex, typical nineteen year old in that she works in clothes shop, has boyfriend and lives with her mum – though her mum has alcohol problems and Alex needs to be the adult in the household. She out with boyfriend Jeremy when she sees Clive, a demon. She initially thinks its the waccy baccy their consuming that’s too strong but as days pass and he keeps turning up she gradually believes he is real. He “helps” her out when she's in danger of being made homeless as mum hasn't paid rent and utilities. Clive tells her that her colleague is going to be sacked for stealing, shows her proof and says if she takes the money she needs it won't really matter as her friend is going to get sacked anyway.

Gradually Clive turns from friend to seducer – he's always had a seductive way even when in demon guise but when he drops that and appears as human Alex can't resist him. Then comes the bombshell, he gifts her the “sight” to be able to see the evil people and tells her she’s been specially chosen to save the world, but she needs to rid the world of these bad people who are in fact empty shells, although they appear real and are people she thought she knew.
She becomes more and more confused and upset at what she has to do, her behaviour is very erratic and concerns her family and friends. Finally she discovers incidents from her past when opens her eyes to what is happening and she has to make a tough decision.

It's an engrossing book, gradually drawing the reader into a world where nothing is as it seems and poor Alex has unwittingly become simply a pawn for Clive. We wonder how she can get out of the situation she's found herself in but doesn't want to be there, and sympathise with her even though she is committing some dreadful actions. It's clever the way Clive starts as helpful friend earning her trust, then becomes seducer and finally a bully telling her she has to commit horrific acts to save the world from destruction – if only she's remembered the old adage “never trust a demon” but then we'd not have this excellent book....

Horror isn't a genre I'd usually chose but this book isn't a blood'n'guts type but more a book that makes you consider choices and the horror is in the decisions she makes. As I said earlier its good length and well edited, and at only 99p for kindle a real bargain.

The stars: well I have to give it 4 even though its not a genre I’d usually chose (and didn't realise when I picked this book...speed reading previews again – I must stop doing that!) because it was so well written that I still enjoyed it.

                                         4 Stars!

Progeny of Innocence by Patti Roberts

The Medieval Saga continues...

Two Worlds. One Ancient... still reeling from the ravages of a War that still threatens the lives of millions. A World where powerful Beings from Ancient Civilizations still rule.  A Realm where Gods, Angels, Myths and Magic exists.

And One New... Grace is not a little girl anymore! And as a teenager, Grace's visions become more frequent, urgent, torturing her life further still. The answers she hopes to find in her visions only leave her asking more questions... Who is Juliette?

Then death comes knocking...and when three of Grace's school friends are found burned to death, and their parents die in a fatal car accident that same weekend, some start to wonder if it really was just a coincidence, or a contrived plan to wipe out an entire family?

And if so, why, and by whom? And more importantly, will evil strike again?

You can bet your soul on it!

Last year I reviewed the first book “ "Paradox - Angels are Here"” by Patti Roberts, and I was lucky enough to be asked to review the second book her trilogy – Progeny of Innocence. I enjoyed the first book and was not prepared for what the author had in store for her readers next.  This book was FANTASTIC! I was spell bound from the very first page. She packed one heck of a literary punch with this book and this second book far excided my expectations.
Progeny of Innocence starts off where the first book left off.  we find ourselves once again listening to a story told by Juliette as we get out more about the Ancient world of Alatair which is home to the opposing forces of Angels known as Gregorian’s and Bulgarians, whose ancient battle for reign will play out in the New World known as Earth. It is here where we see Grace again, now a teenager and still trying to figure out who Juliette as her life begins to spin towards her true destiny.
Reminiscent of the first book,  this novel has two distinct plotlines; the ancient world of Alatair and Grace’s Story. Some of my questions that I had from the first book are answered as the author delves deeper into the history of the Ancient World of Alatair. Patti Roberts blends a mixture of Aboriginal and Celtic myths into this book which much to my surprise works. It explains how each race came into being and why they are rising up to fight the threat of the Gregorian’s who have “fallen”.   Though in my mind this storyline over shadow’s Grace’s story. Grace’s story is one of Innocence and becoming as she finds events beyond her control as those around her try to protect her from what Is about to come.  My personal preference is the world of the “fallen’ but then I love a dark and twisted tale and the author does not disappoint. The story lines move much faster than the first book, as the foundations to the story has been set. I really enjoyed the buildup of tension throughout the book and as I finished the last page I wanted the next book in hand.  You will be left hanging as the plots merge together and you know that the really story is about to begin.
As with the first book the line between main characters and supporting characters blur, each character brings something to the book and help move the plot line along. We see the supporting characters around Grace fleshed out more as the mystery of whom and how they came into being is revealed. We see new characters introduced that I am sure will play a pivotal role in the outcome of this trilogy.  The author does a great job of bringing all the characters into play, as their stories are played out and move the story along to its conclusion.  I still think Abaddon is my favorite character, he is evil corrupt and so very very interesting. There are many layers that we haven’t seen that I am sure will be revealed in time.  Grace though being a bit older is still very much in the dark as to what is happening in the world around her, all is not as she thinks and just as she is on the verge of remembering those who have been sent to protect push her farther into the dark as if she is not yet ready to face her destiny.
The book is very well written and I feel that Patti Roberts outdoes herself with this story, and is such a talented writer which is much more evident in this book than the first. With the Kindle version priced at $2.99 this is a must read!
With that said I give this book 5 Stars!  Progeny of Innocence is wonderfully intricate book that blends fantasy, myth and legends into a truly magical tale.

Blood Life by Gianna Perada

Blood Life is a vampire/witch thriller full of blood, magic, love, violence, and sex. It is no Twilight or Vampire Diaries! It's much darker and sexier, but equally as engrossing and unique. The witches and vampires of the fictional world of the Spectrum have united and created a race of half-breeds called the Combined. These are very powerful entities, but their race has been threatened . . . Book Description

A fantasy book to really get your teeth into. Its not a light fluffy read but quite dark and very, very intense.

I found it needed a lot of concentration in the early chapters to place in my mind which character was which and I did find that sometimes I was quite ambivalent to them. Roman the hero is initially a straightforward young man who yearns to be an actor in the kings troupe – he sees the kings daughter there when called in to understudy at short notice and they fall in love. Here I liked Roman but when he loses his love to Lokee via an arranged marriage at the kings wish he becomes a vampire and at times is quite dislikeable and selfish. Its not all sweetness and light in this novel but a lot of darkness and killing of humans for food – no “veggie” vampires or “sippers” who take a little and do no harm here...the victims just die! Roman has to wait centuries for his love Alexandria to be reborn as Althea when she is killed by Lokee.

He's made into a vampire so he can live and wait for her by Devendra who we first meet as his horse!!– she's a very clever witch/vampire and leading member of the Combined – those of both races. She's also Lokees mother and becomes Romans lover. Confused yet? That's why this book needs concentration – it all gels together nicely but does mean the early stages take some intense concentration and its not a book to be read when you're heavily involved in something else. Its not a lightweight mind numbing relaxing book but a story to be thoroughly thought through. I think its one of those where you actually gain more from it on a second reading as one has more understanding of this world and its characters.

I felt really sorry for Devendra when she steps back from Roman after two hundred years as his lover because she knows his true love has been reborn and Roman will meet her. Devendra is very much in favour of Fate and this allows her to step back but at times she wants to be able to help Roman but Lillith- the Mother of the Combined, first a witch, then a vampire, tells her she will not interfere even though things look grim and the characters go through great ordeals.

Through trials and tribulations finally things reach a conclusion and I understand the author is writing a prequel – which will be very interesting I'm sure and help with sorting which character fits where in the story – and a sequel. Like all good stories this ends without any deep cliff-hanger ( I HATE with a vengeance ones that end and leave the poor reader waiting for next book to find out what's happening) but there are hints and clues as to what the next book will contain.

For a first book this is very well written – there are very few spelling, grammar errors and its a nice long length – I'm not a short story/novella fan but want something to engage my attention for hours and this certainly fits the brief. I found the characters a little unemotional and found it difficult to empathise with them at times – it could just be a personal thing though as I like to feel immersed in the characters and their story and I felt “outside” this story – maybe as its written in third person rather than first person point of view? Its very subjective how we enjoy and perceive books so this criticism may only apply to those who share my wanting to “be” part of the book.

Its available in kindle in UK and in kindle, nook and paperback in US. The great advantage of online book sellers is that we can read a few chapters to get the flavour of a story and this book is certainly worth a look if you enjoy fantasy novels with supernatural characters.

The stars.... 4. I did enjoy it but the story line didn't completely engross me and I would have enjoyed the book more if I could feel more close to the characters. As always though remember this is my personal view and others will feel very differently – one mans meat and all that!

Of Weft and Weave by Clive S. Johnson

The complex tale follows Lord Nephril, Dica’s Master of Ceremonies, and his oddly assorted companions who take up the challenge of saving the kingdom themselves. What comes to light is a multi-layered fabric of interwoven interests and conflicts that takes them far beyond the comfort and safety of Dica. Their journey marks an absorbing rebirth of ancient myth and legend, as alive and immediate now as in its dim and distant past.

At its heart is Leiyatel – the Living Green Stone Tree – preserver of the realm’s fortune and wondrous creation of the ancient Engers of Bazarral, but there’s more to their world than her own Certain Power, more within Nature’s far wider and wiser domain. Book Description
As you know if you read my review of the first book set in this world then I was looking forward to this novel, which can sometimes be a bad thing as your expectations are set higher. Well I will just say before I give a quick rundown that it did not disappoint, in fact it easily met my expectations so that a lot of the first review could apply to this novel as well.
It was quite exciting to come across well-loved characters & the Authors very descriptive and quite frequently poetic style of writing, but what was most interesting was the fact that this was an inhabited Dica, something I had wondered about all through the first novel. Some things were as I expected but a lot was not, the sense of place for everything was wonderfully described, the people themselves & the communities that they lived full bodied with unexpected surprises along the way.
I thought that I would know which way the story was heading, but no just as you thought that you had a grasp on the situation the story took a path that you didn’t expect,  exciting and clever writing as I was kept guessing at every turn. New aspects of known characters were shown as well as new characters, all interesting in their own right & some like ‘Steermaster Sconner’ could quite happily have stories of their own.
The writing like the first novel is complex, with quite a number of issues that do get you thinking, especially as they have plenty of weight in today’s world.
Again I’ve kept this short as it should be experienced; there are a lot of surprises that I don’t want spoil. All I will say finally is that the world of Dica has been opened up wonderfully, a lot of things have unexpected answers & there are even more questions now as to how it came about & the ending will be a surprise (It was for me, still undecided though).
It finished a little too soon for me as it has gripped my imagination and I want more, though in what form that this might take I have no idea, exciting. Oh I nearly forgot, the illustrations are great, a real unexpected bonus; which definitely add to the whole experience.
Writing the second novel like a bands second album is difficult but the Author has done a good job for me so it will have to be given a highly recommended again. This world & writer have lots more to offer.

Jericho Solus by Jeffery Moore

Jericho Solus

“They watch me—the feeling as acute as a sharp, cold blade against my skin. I may have lived an ordinary existence, but I can fight. Though my memory is like a beast cowering in the shadows, I know in my core I can fight, as if it’s what I’m wired to do.
Her breaths echo in my dark cell. Is she real? She fills my emptiness with heat, and God help the people that harm her. I am the Solus. My name is Jericho, and killing is what I do best.”
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started to read Jericho Solus by Jeffery Moore, and I have to say it was much more that I could have hoped for. I would have to classify this book as a fantasy with a bit of history thrown in for good measure.
The story follows Jericho who finds himself a captive with no knowledge of who or what held him. As his memories surface from the past he starts to remember who and what he is. His memories strengthen his resolve as he demands answers and in turn is reunited with Gebal as they explore their memories of the past and how they affect their current situation. Their journey takes them far into another galaxy and on a faraway planet they discover their true destiny.
The book is extremely well written and well-timed with strategically placed flashbacks that added so much depth and back ground to the current happenings within the story. Within these flashbacks the characters are fleshed in a way that drew me in and I was already emotionally invested by the end of the first chapter and continued through the entire book.  The plot line was fairly complex and I was quite impressed with how the author included pivotal points in history in a way that makes total sense and leaves the reader with a sense of “What if?”
There were three main characters within the story:Jericho, Gebal and Dimash. We see the characters develop as they travel to their destination of another planet to fulfill a quest for the Kamai. I really enjoyed watching the characters evolve as they discover that the mistakes of the past can shape their decisions and outcomes of the future. The author did a fantastic job bringing the story to life with his descriptions of the many different landscapes and cities. This  was a very visual read for me and the story played out in my mind with vivid images.  I also enjoyed the author’s battle and fight scenes. They were very true to life and as a lover of warriors and battles I was very pleased.
There is so much I could say about this book and its characters but that would give too much away and I feel this is a book that needs to be discovered as each page turns. I strongly recommend this book for those who enjoy a mix of history and fantasy. I for one am looking forward to reading more from Jeffery Moore.
With that said I give this book a 4.5

A bit about the Author :
Jeffery Moore writes speculative fiction. His stories transcend genre boundaries,
making them difficult to categorize. He writes what he likes to read and the
stories that entice him most are stories with character displacement, characters
that for whatever reason are thrust into alien worlds or environments. Though in
broad terms his stories may be categorized as Fantasy, you will read none of the
Middle Earth or vampire themes and characters—he feels these are done to death.
Moore strives to introduce concepts into his stories that haven’t been done
.
