I was given this copy free
to review, but as always on the basis that my opinion is honestly held, and
whether paid for or free my views are not influenced by that. Integrity is
important to me and gushing false reviews do neither author nor reader any
favours. As always my views are what I honestly feel about this book.
This
book is very unusual compared to my normal genre. It has my beloved vampires in
but this time we see things from the point of view of not some rich and
powerful vampire lord but from one of the lower ones, struggling to deal with
life. Severin is a “babysitter” for two younger vamps, charged by his lord to
live with them and oversee their everyday training, and makes their rent by
playing his violin at a club. Charged by his Lord to perform at a private
function in another vampire lords territory he sees a beautiful and talented
young lady and knows that his Lord will expect him to bring her to him, but is
warned off by the Lord of that area. He looks back at his own life and sees
what she's in for, and wonders if that’s really good for her. His two baby
vamps depend on him but he's drawn to Tersia and tries to help her.
This
book is very different in that we seem to be dropped in the middle of the story
– it doesn't have a beginning, middle and end but is a snippet of time in a
vampires long life, showing just what happens in the everyday struggle for
those lower down the scale and what problems they face, how they have to report
and do as their Lord commands despite others believing they have a freedom. I
really felt for Severin and wished he could have something with Tersia as they
seemed attracted to each other and had a shared love of music and similar
ambitions as to where it should take them although Severin has had his
ambitions curtailed when he was changed into a vampire.
It’s
a real bitter-sweet romance and tugs at heartstrings, and left me feeling a
little bereft for the pair – they've both had such awful problems they deserve
a bit of happiness. The ending is left open suggesting they may get their happy
ever after or may be pursued by both vampire lords wanting Tersia. I'd have
liked the book to have a bit more of a beginning and I'd have loved it to
continue, or for it to continue in a further volume so we see what happens to
the pair.
It's
well written and edited but I do feel at £ 4.03 for 116 pages its quite
expensive though compared to what else is available at that price.
Stars:
4, it’s a very unusual book and worth reading so 4 for content but if I'm doing
all round rating I’d downgrade to 3.5 because of the price.
