Into Darkness (The Godstone War) by Marcus J Black

In the land of Caladom the gods are a very real and cruel presence; bringing destruction to any that dare to break their law. For generations the people have served the demands and whims of divine authority without question, under the constant yoke of fear.

A young girl runs from slavery. An act, deemed to be a crime, leads to the destruction of a village. It seems that once again the gods will require appeasement. For good or ill, there are those who stand firm and only the balance of power can shift; as desire for revenge sends ripples throughout the land. Book Description
Into Darkness is my first ever hard to write book review.

First of all this book is start of a set or series. How many I am not sure I did not realize this when I started, but I would warn you that I felt disappointed and slightly cross at the end of this book.

OK. So lets get the unhappy vibe out the way first, then onto the better bits.

I felt this book ended unloved, with no passion or caring for those writing or reading.
I do get that it is part of a set (whether available or not). I collect and read many, many books that are part of a set or part of a series, often awaiting the next installment with itching fingers and baited breath. What I did not like about Into Darkness is the way it concludes. I feel like someone has taken great care in writing the story line, plot and building the characters up.

Then someone has come along and said "This needs to be broken into more than one book". So they have, literally. They got to a chapter and said "We'll end book one here." And that's it! No understanding end to anything. No cliff hanger or lead to the next book, just an abrupt, no sense, non-answering, confusing end to book one!
Disappointed and slightly cross. To the point I do not want to read another one.

HOWEVER! Marcus Black IS a good writer, he has an amazing sense of imagination and has taken great care to introduce the characters, their own story lines and then blended them together to enable you to easily create them in your own imagination. The story line of Into Darkness must have been a labour of love for Marcus as from the very start I could see the world of Caradom and the lives of those who live in it.

Marcus artfully introduces and then connects each character together until you are left with the miss matched team of unlikely friends. Laurethia, Malath, Artherion, and Davish who are about to embark on a life changing mission for all of those who live there. Who will survive? What events will change them? What and who will they meet on the way? And What IS a Vargh!? To find out you must read Into Darkness and discover for yourself with your own imagination.

This book will attract those whom love magic, dragons and ole world beliefs, with elves and dwarfs mixed in you will not be disappointed. It has the potential to be an amazing series, just needs a little work to blend the ends and the start of next installment together a little smoother. I really did enjoy reading this book, but due to the way it ends i felt angry at the lack of love towards the story, characters and readers the ending showed.

As for how the staring goes, this scores a low 1 star from me due to the way Into Darkness ends and for that reason only. So as it is for THAT reason my ACTUAL scoring for this book is 3 and half stars. Marcus Black has the potential to have a 5 Star series if the editing can be softened.
