The Brightest Light by Scott J Robinson

Kade was once the up and coming star of The Skyway Men, a globe spanning criminal organization. Then he made a mistake. Then one more. Then one too many.

They could have killed him but instead, he was banished.

Kade spent ten next years on a backwoods patch of farmland that flew along the quietest windlanes. He worked the smithy and fixed the crystal machines that ran everything from lights to biplanes and the huge engines that kept the skylands aloft. But all the while, he waited to be recalled.

When the Skyway Men finally offer him another job, Kade can hardly believe his luck. But soon he's going to need all the luck he can get. The skylands still sail the sky, there are criminals and constables, gun battles and robberies, but nothing is like he remembered. Nothing is the same and nothing is as it seems.

And if you can't trust a bunch of criminals, who can you trust? Book Description.

It has been a while since I had a bit of spare time to read for pleasure so I was looking forward to reading this, as from the synopsis it seemed my sort of read. I wasn't feeling any sense of trepidation as doing these reviews of Authors that I have not come across, has shown me there is a wealth of talent out there. Anyway enough wittering on from me, time for the story.

It seemed a fairly standard plot line, though the action taking place on land that had been plucked from the earth below & powered by a crystal energy with each one different in its build & outlook was definitely intriguing and I was not mistaken. This feature along with the fact that on one hand you have a futuristic technology in the crystals and in the other technology from the early to mid 20th century added another level entirely and introduced a multitude of questions as to how & why.

The story provided subtle hints, which made me all the more curious and before I knew it I was engrossed. The main characters develop well all through the story, and I definitely found that I warmed to them, wanting to turn every page just to find out if they were ok and just how did they get out of that situation.

The novel isn't long but it is very fast paced and action packed so you have to pay attention. Not too many new ideas but the way it has all been put together makes you think otherwise. Well written & clever writing. To write a short novel and include all elements of a larger story within & leave you wanting more is a skill.

As usual I haven't said much about plot especially with a story of this length as you could easily give it away. Initially I wasn't sure initially if it was going to be run of the mill but enough unexpected twists made sure that it was not.

A good Author who has introduced us to a world and characters that have plenty more to offer, there are a lot of unanswered questions not for the story itself but about the world that it was set in and I can only hope that there is more to come.I can only give 4.5 as I would have liked more, but this is a highly recommended read. You will not I think be disappointed.
