I was given this copy free for review, but as always on the basis that my opinion is honestly held, and whether paid for or free my views are not influenced by that. Integrity is important to me and gushing false reviews do neither author nor reader any favours. As always my views are what I honestly feel about this book.
Paranormal romance genre. What a treat to have a heroine my age. Seems to me we're sadly left out when it comes to romance with the usual heroines being twenty some things so go Jacqueline for giving us a real heroine, with sarky humour and proud of her age.
Forty nine year old Sophronia is touring America when she is forced to spend the night at a run-down motel on the Californian coast. She discovers the owner is a juvenile witch but unaware of her heritage. As a Crone – older witch much sought after by vampires - she tries hard to avoid anything to do with them but sees motel owner Charlotte has a youngish vampire boyfriend and her conscience is conflicted. She knows Charlotte (Charlie) will get picked up by her boyfriend’s master at some point and feels she has to warn her but her instincts for self-preservation are screaming run to her. She tries to warn Charlie but the poor girl thinks she's rambling when she talks about vampires and witches and too soon Ethan Master Hagan arrives.
Sophronia can influence younger vampires but old ones like Hagan are beyond her and she is caught. There follows all sorts of adventures and fights that Sophronia gets caught up in, while trying constantly to escape. Sophronia is a fabulous character, clever, witty and her use of sarcasm while delivering compliments is superb. Hagan is used to immediate obedience and gets very frustrated at her to begin with. She constantly goes against his orders and questions his decisions shocking him and his other vampires. Over time he seems to become more “humanized” and attracted to Sophronia actually thinking about what she wants rather than just delivering his usual orders. I hope this is just a beginning of a series with the two as the characters are just perfect for sparking off each other creating some really funny humour and I see the potential for lots more books with the two working together.
The book is dialogue based and written is first person from Sophronia's viewpoint. That’s my favourite type of novel to read as I can put myself in Sophronia's place mentally especially as I understand her age based motivations and experiences so well. Its £3.99 for 241 pages on kindle, available from amazon and as ebook in other formats from Lyrical Press.
Stars: I really enjoyed this book, quite a light read not deep emotion and made it me laugh out loud at some of the sarky comments she makes so its 4.5.
