A father she never knew existed, An impossible decision that had to be made, A lie she must keep to herself at all costs, And the realization that every choice she makes has consequences.
Fairy and law enforcement agent, Dulcie O'Neil, has just discovered that her father is the Head of the Netherworld, and a double-dealing, illegal potions importer. Worse yet, she's now working for him.
Knight Vander, Dulcie's boyfriend and Head of the Association of Netherworld Creatures, is on to her father, but, in the process, will he discover Dulcie's secret? And if he does, will it mean his life? Book Description
Well the eagerly awaited book four is out. First thing to say is you really must read books 1-3 first and they are available on kindle as a bundle at excellent price. This series is in the paranormal romance genre but not one of those heavy deep stories – though I love those too – but a lighter easy to read style. Sometimes you want a book that’s very deep and others you want something more gentle to read that you can fit in around your life without having to restart to recall who's who – H P Mallory fits this perfectly and with our lives being so busy I’m sure more and more readers are looking for books like this. Both the Dulcie O’Neil and Jolie Wilkins series fit this brief well – having got up to date with Dulcie I’ve now to catch up with Jolie's life!)
HP's books are always well written and edited, full credit here :) – none of the oft made kindle mistakes of books full of errors in grammar and spelling, I can live with a few, everyone is human but too many and I just get put off. They're also well priced and a good length – so many “bargain” books are simply short stories or novellas but not these ones, just good value for money.
Anyway – to the book...Dulcie is working for her newly discovered father who is not only head of the underworld but an ego maniac out for power and distributing illegal potions. She agreed to work for him at end of last book in order to free her lover Knight from prison where her father had unfairly incarcerated him. This means that as knight is head of the ANC Dulcie needs to get her job back but has to also ensure she and knight break up as he will be suspicious of her actions and she can't cope with lying to him while still being in a relationship. She has to follow her fathers instructions or he will kill Knight and she knows he means the threat. It's a very emotional and draining time for Dulcie and tear jerking when she has to make Knight believe its all over...I felt so so sad for her having to do what she believes is wrong, go against all her moral principles and has no choice if she wants to save Knight. She's determined not to allow her father to trap her long term as he has her ex boss and crush Quinn whose given up hope of anything better but when will her opportunity come?
The usual tangles follow – handsome vampire Bram whose keen to get into Dulcie knickers has his part to play in her adventures, as do her friends who worry about how she seems to have changed since her return. Bram is always very secretive but we learn a little more about his previous involvement with the underworld and why he wants to keep away now, and in the process see that he genuinely seems to have feelings for Dulcie other than just physical desires. Quinn is also working unwillingly for her father and heavily involved in the story but she's not sure she can rely on his help as he seems to have accepted his fate and tells her she shouldn't fight it. He's also keen to try again with Dulcie knowing she had a crush on him before and feeling that being both in same boat they could comfort each other.
They get told about a new drug her father is about to flood the market with and its very very addictive and Dulcie feels she has to do something but what? There follows a real white knuckle adventure for her in typical Dulcie style with everyone thinking she's doing other things and no-one knowing the truth. She has to take a chance in trusting someone but has she chosen correctly. Well at a breakneck speed all comes hurtling to a nail biting climax, more tender scenes where Knight shows he still loves her and yet can't be with her as a criminal – its really bitter-sweet knowing how she really feels and yet she can't let him know the truth for his own safety.
There follow revelations that not everyone is who they seem and not all is as straightforward as it appeared. Sort of par for the course for Dulcie books where lose ends are neatly tied (thankfully – I hate those books where they are left til next one in series) and yet cliffhanger openings for next instalment in her adventures are neatly brought in to whet out appetites and try our patience...waiting for next instalment is always so hard when a story has gripped like this :(
The Stars – well, spelling and grammar excellent, decent length, well priced and a gripping storyline once again with an ending I didn't guess – has to be a 5 star book :)
5 Stars
