Beyond Armageddon Book 1: Disintegration by Anthony DeCosmo

Earth is invaded by a collection of alien animals--both predators and prey--as well as extraterrestrial militias of varying technological capabilities. Governments fall; cities are overrun. The landscape grows wild, alien forces attempt to carve out zones of control, and humanity no longer sits atop the food chain.
Trevor Stone finds himself alone and afraid in this chaotic new world when he meets a strange old man who grants three gifts.
First, a well-stocked estate perfect for surviving the initial invasion. Second, the ability to control the fiercest breeds of dogs. Third, access to the genetic memories of mankind.
It seems he is all part of a plan; a plan that has set 'rules' to this invasion and one that blurs the line between hero and villain.

Book Description

I at first didn't hold out much hope for this book as it looked like the sort of thing that you would find in the bargain bucket in your local book store. The book description and cover both seemed a little cheesy. Then I started to read and found my first impression totally wrong. The idea of the book actually works and isn't as bad as I feared. In fact it works really well and you do get caught  up in the world that Anthony DeCosmo creates.

The book follows the story of Trevor Stone as he struggles to survive in a world gone mad. The world we know falls apart and Trevor finds himself coming face to face with the stuff of nightmares. We see him evolve from broken survivor to fighter and then to leader. He receives help and aid from some very unlikely places and quickly starts to create a small haven of sanity in a world gone crazy.

The book surprised me with the number of genres that it crossed. Part Post Apocalyptic, part Futuristic Fantasy and part Sci-fi. It almost feels like this book should have a genre of its own. The mechanism that brings about the end of the world is not revealed within the book, although things are hinted at throughout the story. The author makes no attempt to explain why things are happening but the subtle allusions hint that things will be revealed as the story progresses through the rest of the series.

Anthony DeCosmo's writing style drew me into his world from the start. I got a real sense through his narration of the world at peril and the insanity of the things surrounding Trevor Stone. The battle scenes are edgy and tense, leaving you enthralled with the plight of the characters. Although there a vast array of characters within this novel it is the experiences of Trevor Stone that move the plot along. It is his tale that we follow so avidly. The book itself is fairly long, but thankfully maintains a fast pace from the start. Every page pulls you to read the next.

This book is only the first in the Beyond Armageddon series and there is a small twist at the end that leaves you wanting more. I wholeheartedly enjoyed this book and would urge you to give it a go. The excitement within these pages is addictive and you will find yourself still reading long after  everyone else is asleep. For a book to keep me entertained without pause for so long is a rare thing and at only £0.72 for the kindle version you just can't go wrong. This book is as much fun as you can wave a stick at, well worth it 5 star rating.

Beyond Armageddon II: Empire is already out.

The Kinshield Legacy by K. C. May

A mysterious stone tablet with five magical gems has sat abandoned in a cave for two hundred years. The kingdom is in ruins, with only warrant knights to keep the peace. But then, the gems in the tablet, one by one, disappear.

Warrant knight Gavin Kinshield is a man of many secrets. He's the one deciphering the runes in the tablet. Unless he can find a suitable replacement, he'll be Thendylath's next king. All he really wants is the letter written by his ancestor Ronor Kinshield, champion to King Arek, confessing the truth of how the king perished... a letter he must earn by tracking down a common thief.

But when Gavin saves a woman's life, what should have been a simple task draws him face-to-face with his nightmarish past... and the truth of King Arek's demise.   Book Description

The Kinshield Legacy is an epic fantasy with all the classic themes you would expect from this genre. The storyline follows the adventures of Gavin Kinshield who through the story gathers around him a small band of followers as he confronts a classic fantasy villain. The plot holds no surprises and K. C. May allows us to see Gavin's destiny very quickly into the book. Instead of using destiny as a diving force for the plot the author instead uses a number of sub-plots that weave themselves into the a bigger picture. This is well done and although a lot of the story feels familiar it does feel fresh at the same time.

The writing style is excellent and you quickly become immersed within the tale. I particularly enjoyed the action sequences which were exciting, well written. and were used to carry forward the storytelling. Each of the characters developed throughout the book and were fully rounded, three dimensional from the start.

The world in which they inhabit is wonderfully portrayed and completely believable.

The Kinshield Legacy doesn't add anything new to this well trodden genre and a lot of the themes feel familiar. That being said the book is an exceptionally enjoyable ride through well-known territory. Well written and highly entertaining, you are taken on an adrenalin fuelled roller-coaster ride of excitement and exhilaration. K.C.May is well worth adding to your fantasy collection and will sit comfortably beside David Eddings, Raymond E. Feist and Stephen Donaldson.

The Kinshield Legacy in the first in a series of the same name. The Wayfarer King the second instalment is expected sometime in 2011. It will be on my "to buy list" and it is a series I would highly recommend.

Fantasy runs away with poll

Hi All

Sorry it has taken me a while to get a new review posted, but I was attacked by the EVIL that is Swine Flu. It knocked me down for a while, but I'm back up and ready to go.

A new review was added today: Rougarou by Judith Ann McDowell

Well our poll of your favourite Genres has ended with Fantasy being the run away winner, while poor Sci-Fi didn't get a single vote. So expect more Fantasy books to appear in reviews. I may also throw in an occasional Sci-Fi just to see if I can convert a few of you.

Soon there will be a few new reviewers appearing here on DarkissReads. This will increase the number of posts and give you different viewpoints and tastes to read. One of our new reviewer is still at school and I am sure that you will all welcome him when he arrives with his first review. He is a serious book lover and is looking forward to sharing his passion with you guys. What better way to review books aimed at the younger age group than to have one of the target readership doing the reviewing. More details to follow.

I hope you all had a great Yule and New Year.

Rougarou by Judith Ann McDowell

Jonathan Hindel has a dark secret.
Although his beautiful Angelia has been dead for centuries, his love for her has never died. With the help of a voodoo priestess, young girls in the bayous are brought forth to house Angelia’s spirit, thus allowing Jonathan to still take to his bed the woman he loves.
Jonathan Hindel has another dark secret.
He is a werewolf.    Book Description

When I first looked at this book and its description I believed it to be another Paranormal/Romance, but within minutes of starting the novel I realized just how wrong I was. I discovered it to be a Horror story which doesn't pull its punches. The tale is set in the small community of Saint Anthony Parish, Louisiana, which explains the title. For those not familiar with what a Rougarou is here is a quick definition.

"The Rougarou is a legendary creature in Laurentian French communities linked to European notions of the werewolf".
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The story revolves around the gruesome murder of a young child at the Hindel Mansion, a place of dark rumour and suspicion within the local community. For generations darkness has surrounded the going ons within the grounds of the Hindel Mansion. We follow two friends as they investigate this murder and we go along for the ride as they slowly piece together the facts of the case. Gradually with the help of others they begin to realize the nature of the evil facing them.

The tale has many elements which are woven into an intriguing storyline. The author introduces us to horror, love, friendship, betrayal and redemption. It is at times gritty and dark, which is what you really want with a good gothic horror. Judith McDowell does not romanticise her monster. It is not some poor misunderstood creature that you so often see in modern books, but the reason we are afraid of the dark. Although there is pure evil depicted within this novel the author has also explored the grey area between good and evil with great success.

I found this book to be a really enjoyable romp through the werewolf legends of Louisiana and is well worth reading. If you are tired of the nice fluffy interpretation of werewolves often seen in modern Paranormal/Romance then this would be a nice change. The story is fast paced and doesn't tax your brain in any way. The narrative style is enjoyable with the interaction between characters being the driving force of this tale.

With a sequel already published (Rougarou II) you are able to enjoy a continuing storyline. Watch this space for a future review of this second novel, which I understands takes place a year after the events of the first. If you enjoy a bit of classic gothic horror then Judith McDowell deserves your support. A well earned four and a half stars.
